Heaven the city of God - Rod Ross

John saw “a new heaven and a new earth”. The first heaven and earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea. He saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, come down from heaven prepared like a beautifully dressed bride.

He heard a loud voice from the throne saying:

“Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people and he will dwell with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things has ceased to exist.”

The one seated on the throne said,

“I am making everything new! Write this down for these words are trustworthy and true. It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all of this and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and the liars – will be consigned to the fiery lake of hell. This is the second death.”

One of the seven angels who held one of the seven bowls of the seven last plagues went to John and said, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

The angel carried John away in the Spirit to a tall mountain and showed him Jerusalem coming down out of heaven. It shone with the glory of God and its brilliance was like that of a precious jewel. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the west, three on the north, and three on the south. The wall of the city had twelve foundations and on them were the names of the twelve apostles.

The angel took a measuring rod of gold and measured the city, its gates, and its walls. The city was laid out like a square and was 12,000 stadia in length and as wide and high as it is long. The angel measured the wall. It was 144 cubits thick.

The wall was made of jasper and the city was pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls. The great street was made of gold.

John did not see the temple in the city because God and Jesus are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it for the glory of God gives it light and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

What the story means to us today

God recreates everything for the victors when the war over evil is won

Through John’s vision, we see the close, personal relationship with God himself finally fulfilled when God begins to dwell with men in a new heaven and earth. Isaiah 65:17 had already told of this when God said, “I will create a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” In John’s vision, we witness the creator of the heavens and earth recreate everything as a gift to the victors. The new heaven and earth will become their dwelling place for all of eternity.

Additional thoughts and considerations

Does the new heaven and earth follow the Millennium period or occur concurrently with it?

John says,

“I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.”

In John’s vision, the Holy City seems to be fully created when it descends from heaven. Furthermore, we know from John 14:2 that Jesus had said, “I am going to prepare a place for you.” It is likely the new heaven and earth follow the second coming of Christ and his thousand-year reign on earth. Potentially, Christ used the Millennium period to prepare the New Jerusalem and to ready mankind for its new perpetual existence with God. In addition, some theorize that the new Heaven could serve as a resting place for the resurrected and the saints during the Millennium period.

The disappearance of the sea from Earth

John says he saw a new heaven and a new earth and that “the first heaven and earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea”. It seems our current heaven and earth were destroyed in preparation for the new heaven and earth but the reason for the disappearance of the sea in the new arrangement is unclear. The sea was the birthplace of the beast and the place of the dead so possibly its disappearance symbolizes the beast’s complete and ever-lasting destruction.

Regardless, when heaven and earth are finally unified, the absence of water hints that worldly concerns such as food and water will no longer be applicable to humans.

The significance of the number twelve in John’s vision

The number twelve is used throughout John’s imagery. The New Jerusalem had twelve gates decorated with twelve pearls and guarded by twelve angels. The gates bear the names of the twelve tribes of Israel and are held in place with a structure that is composed of twelve foundation stones. Even the measurements of the city incorporate the number 12. Its walls measure 12,000 stadia and had a thickness of 144 cubits (12 x 12).

Although the measures could be a literal representation, it is more likely the traditional meaning for the number 12, completeness, is implied. John is illustrating the perfection of the new Jerusalem by quantifying its features with the number 12.

The new heaven and earth remind us that Christ conquered death on the cross

The voice from the throne announces, “God will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death.” The gist of this proclamation is salvation, through Jesus, allows us to become closer to God – and with that comes eternal life. This is why many note that Christ’s death on the cross was not just a physical death, but a symbolic death (through his resurrection) for all those who choose the salvation Jesus offers.

City’s foundation of jeweled stones

The verses tell us, The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve stones nearly match the twelve stones mentioned in Exodus 28:17 which describes the breastplate of priestly garments. The only different being, in some translations, sapphire and ruby are replaced with lapis lazuli and Carnelian. It is clear that John’s description of the New Jerusalem that “shone with the glory of God” was magnificent and nearly impossible for John to describe using human words.

The science and history behind the story

12,000 stadia

John says the city was 12,000 stadia long. A stadia is more than 8 miles long. Thus, 12,000 stadia equal about 1,400 miles.

144 cubits

John says the city’s wall was 144 cubits thick. A cubit is about 18 inches. Thus 144 cubits equals about 200 feet.

21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, and the sea existed no more. 21:2 And I saw the holy city—the new Jerusalem—descending out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride adorned for her husband. 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Look! The residence of God is among human beings. He will live among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them. 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more—or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.”

21:5 And the one seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new!” Then he said to me, “Write it down, because these words are reliable and true.” 21:6 He also said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who is thirsty I will give water free of charge from the spring of the water of life. 21:7 The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 21:8 But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, idol worshipers, and all those who lie, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. That is the second death.”

21:9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb!” 21:10 So he took me away in the Spirit to a huge, majestic mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. 21:11 The city possesses the glory of God; its brilliance is like a precious jewel, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper. 21:12 It has a massive, high wall with twelve gates, with twelve angels at the gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of the nation of Israel are written on the gates. 21:13 There are three gates on the east side, three gates on the north side, three gates on the south side and three gates on the west side. 21:14 The wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

21:15 The angel who spoke to me had a golden measuring rod with which to measure the city and its foundation stones and wall. 21:16 Now the city is laid out as a square, its length and width the same. He measured the city with the measuring rod at fourteen hundred miles (its length and width and height are equal). 21:17 He also measured its wall, one hundred forty-four cubits according to human measurement, which is also the angel’s. 21:18 The city’s wall is made of jasper and the city is pure gold, like transparent glass. 21:19 The foundations of the city’s wall are decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 21:20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21:21 And the twelve gates are twelve pearls—each one of the gates is made from just one pearl! The main street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

21:22 Now I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God—the All-Powerful—and the Lamb are its temple. 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God lights it up, and its lamp is the Lamb. 21:24 The nations will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their grandeur into it. 21:25 Its gates will never be closed during the day (and there will be no night there). 21:26 They will bring the grandeur and the wealth of the nations into it, 21:27 but nothing ritually unclean will ever enter into it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or practices falsehood, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life

6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). 26 And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

The Message

I saw Heaven and earth new-created. Gone the first Heaven, gone the first earth, gone the sea.

2 I saw Holy Jerusalem, new-created, descending resplendent out of Heaven, as ready for God as a bride for her husband.

3–5 I heard a voice thunder from the Throne: “Look! Look! God has moved into the neighborhood, making his home with men and women! They’re his people, he’s their God. He’ll wipe every tear from their eyes. Death is gone for good—tears gone, crying gone, pain gone—all the first order of things gone.” The Enthroned continued, “Look! I’m making everything new. Write it all down—each word dependable and accurate.”

6–8 Then he said, “It’s happened. I’m A to Z. I’m the Beginning, I’m the Conclusion. From Water-of-Life Well I give freely to the thirsty. Conquerors inherit all this. I’ll be God to them, they’ll be sons and daughters to me. But for the rest—the feckless and faithless, degenerates and murderers, sex peddlers and sorcerers, idolaters and all liars—for them it’s Lake Fire and Brimstone. Second death!”

9–12 One of the Seven Angels who had carried the bowls filled with the seven final disasters spoke to me: “Come here. I’ll show you the Bride, the Wife of the Lamb.” He took me away in the Spirit to an enormous, high mountain and showed me Holy Jerusalem descending out of Heaven from God, resplendent in the bright glory of God.

12–14 The City shimmered like a precious gem, light-filled, pulsing light. She had a wall majestic and high with twelve gates. At each gate stood an Angel, and on the gates were inscribed the names of the Twelve Tribes of the sons of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, three gates on the west. The wall was set on twelve foundations, the names of the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb inscribed on them.

15–21 The Angel speaking with me had a gold measuring stick to measure the City, its gates, and its wall. The City was laid out in a perfect square. He measured the City with the measuring stick: twelve thousand stadia, its length, width, and height all equal. Using the standard measure, the Angel measured the thickness of its wall: 144 cubits. The wall was jasper, the color of Glory, and the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. The foundations of the City walls were garnished with every precious gem imaginable: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate a single pearl.

21–27 The main street of the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. But there was no sign of a Temple, for the Lord God—the Sovereign-Strong—and the Lamb are the Temple. The City doesn’t need sun or moon for light. God’s Glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp! The nations will walk in its light and earth’s kings bring in their splendor. Its gates will never be shut by day, and there won’t be any night. They’ll bring the glory and honor of the nations into the City. Nothing dirty or defiled will get into the City, and no one who defiles or deceives. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will get in.
